Freedom Learning Group uniquely provides long-term, portable career opportunities specifically for the spouses of deployed military members as graphic designers, project managers, voice talent, and Subject Matter Experts. Despite frequently rotating duty stations, FLG provides jobs to producers who can continue to contribute to education projects from anywhere in the world remotely. We are proud to employ and empower military spouses with enduring, portable careers that can follow them, as they follow their military service members.

Nathan Ecelbarger, CEO, and Stacey Ecelbarger, President are the Co-Founders of Freedom Learning Group.  Nathan is a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, Adjunct Professor, and former Law Enforcement Officer, and has contributed to many fields with a diversified resume of accomplishments, increasing training and education effectiveness through innovation and creativity. Stacey has a background in Criminal Justice, is an accomplished Real Estate Broker, and specializes in training, recruiting and quality assurance making them an ideal pair. They founded Freedom Learning Group with a mission in mind; to not only employ qualified military spouses and veterans, but keep them in their respective fields providing exceptional content delivery in every imaginable discipline. Nathan and Stacey have two beautiful daughters and a perfect baby boy. They share a passion for their family, life, traveling, and FLG. 

Nathan & Stacey Ecelbarger – Co-Founders

Brian Wierman is the Chief Strategy Officer and Business Studies SME at Freedom Learning Group.  Brian is a reserve Lieutenant Colonel in the Marines, and has consulted in education and private industry for over 15 years.  He presently works from his home in Park City, UT. Brian holds an MBA and a Masters in Security Studies, as well as undergraduate degrees in European History and German.  He is completing his PhD in Management through the University of Manchester in the UK. Brian and his wife Jennifer enjoy home educating their three children, and traveling internationally “as often as possible.”

Brian Wierman – Chief Strategy Officer

John Jordan is the Director of Strategic Partnerships for Freedom Learning Group.  He is thrilled to be able to contribute to FLG’s mission by utilizing his educational publishing experience to help employ military spouses and transitioning veterans. And speaking of experience, John has been in the publishing business in one form or another for the past 32 years. He has been working in educational publishing for 26 of those years making stops at Pearson Education, Oxford University Press, Wolters Kluwer along the way. Since 1999 John has concentrated in the ed tech field producing such best-selling products as “Pearson’s Real Nursing Skills”, the first comprehensive digital video training series in Nursing education, Wolters Kluwer’s Health Sciences “DocuCare” the first browser-based educational electronic health record.  John has been married to his wife Donna for 27 years and has two children Kierra, 24 (who works in the movie and commercial industry) and Jack, 21 (who hopes to fly as a naval aviator once he graduates from the University of Rochester). Hobbies include: watching, researching and coaching baseball, doting on his two spoiled dogs and spending too much time on Youtube watching old movies.

Mary Plese is the Senior Operations and Planning Administrator at Freedom Learning Group. She holds a B.A. from the University of Minnesota in International Relations and French. She has served in an administrative role for over 20 years in both large and small companies,  consulting firms and public school systems. Mary lives in Minnesota where she and her husband recently celebrated their 32nd anniversary. They are the parents of two young adults. Mary has been with Freedom Learning Group since its inception and has enjoyed every minute! Seriously!

Mary Plese – Senior Administrator

Kristin Arkema is the Staffing Director at Freedom Learning Group.  Kristin is an Air Force spouse and mother of three boys. She graduated with a B.A. from the University of Iowa and a J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law. She has experience working for various public defense organizations and for a civil litigation firm. She has also volunteered as an advocate in a legal clinic for domestic violence victims, as a legal advocate for public policy change with the Center for Public Interest Law at the University of San Diego, and as an Air Force Key Spouse and Key Spouse Mentor. She has over 10 years of experience in higher education, both teaching and developing content. Like any military family, the Arkemas don’t let the grass grow under their feet. Each of their boys was born at a different duty station. They currently reside in Phoenix, Arizona, but have lived in eight different houses in thirteen years of marriage.  

Kristin Arkema – Staffing Director

Jill Gerhart is a Senior Project Director and mathematics SME at Freedom Learning Group.  Jill is a Navy spouse and mother to three young children. She graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Auburn University and has a Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering from the University of Texas in Austin.  Before starting her family, Jill worked as a structural engineer in Jacksonville, Florida. She also has over 8 years of experience tutoring high level math curriculum. When she is not wrangling her children and working for Freedom Learning Group, she enjoys cooking, reading a good book, and traveling.   Jill and her family currently call Pensacola, Florida home, but like most military families await the adventure the next duty station brings as a chance to discover another slice of the world to call “home for now”.  Fun fact: Jill was our very first military spouse hire! 

Jill Gerhart – Senior Project Director

Comel Rooms is a Senior Project Director, Instructional Design Consultant, and SME in various disciplines for Freedom Learning Group. She has been a military spouse since 1991. She earned a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Oklahoma in 1991 and a M.Ed. from Columbus State University in 1996. She is a dynamic teacher and trainer and enjoys sharing her experience and knowledge in her role as a Cadre Speaker for the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program where she has the opportunity to help Service Members and their families from every branch of the service not only survive, but thrive through all phases of the deployment cycle. Comel also volunteers her time in the military community through involvement with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and teaching the Senior Spouse Leadership Seminar at the Army War College. Comel is passionate about teaching and learning and her experience working with learners of all ages in many different environments has given her a unique perspective.  Comel and her husband, Travis, currently live in Woodbridge VA and have two college-age daughters. The Rooms family loves to travel, especially overseas, and are looking forward to their next life adventure – being a “retired” Army family! 

Comel Rooms – Senior Project Director

Christopher Furton is a Senior Project Director, Information Technology Consultant, and Subject Matter Expert for various technology disciplines at Freedom Learning Group.  As a former Marine Corps Captain and current Navy spouse, he enjoys the same camaraderie found within FLG as he experienced while in military service. Academically, Chris has earned a Master of Science in Information Management from Syracuse University and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from The University of Michigan.  He also maintains active certifications as a Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), ITIL Foundations, and CompTIA’s Security+ and Network+. When not toiling long hours for FLG, Chris is also the co-founder and executive director of the Sanctuary Club, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit company committed to improving the lives of those struggling with addictive substances and behaviors.  Currently, Chris lives in sunny San Diego with his spouse and their Rottweiler daughter.

Christopher Furton – Senior Project Director

Lindsey Sorensen is a Science Team Leader and Senior Project Director at Freedom Learning Group. She’s a veteran and military spouse and, like all of our team, she has a keen knack for problem solving. She has a master’s degree in inorganic chemistry and started her career in the defense industry managing programs and laboratories. You’d be just as likely to see her elbow-deep inside a broken instrument as you would giving a presentation to a room full of people. She’s got a secret love for computer code and is a responsive, dependable, and dedicated team member.
